"Were the models correct? [...] It doesn't really matter," I, for one, would be interested to know if they were. I'd be curious to know what model Krugman is talking about (but probably I'd need to read more than just an article, and I don't feel like making the effort).:) Mary Harrington had an article in "Unheard" about how Trump is the real "decolonizer" because he is dismantling the empire. I think she's right.

I'm having trouble understanding your point here. Are you saying a) that advocates of free trade never bothered to translate their models into political messages meant for non-elites; b) that voters never really bought into free trade; and/or c) a large share of Trump voters knew they were voting for a complete demolition of the global free trade order? I find each of those premises questionable, but I may have misunderstood you.

Yeah, but "stock market going down and prices going up" when you mess with free trade is probably sufficient for most people to stick to it regardless of principles.

There has never been a real 'free market,' as captive markets always subvert it and result in a heavily manipulated market.

Trump is not hero in this scenario.
